In the spring of 1621 after a bitter winter, a Native American Indian, by the name of Squanto, came to the aid of the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness. He taught them how to survive in this new land by showing them how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants.
